2001 ANNUAL MEETING
May 22,2001
VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA
The meeting was called to order 12:43 PM. President Wills recognized Ben Roy, NFPA Regional Representative; Ed Altizer, State Fire Marshal; Rick Farthing, Chief Engineer , State Fire Marshal’s Office; Phil Paquette, IAAI representative to the Virginia Fire Services Board; Rick Witt, Past Pres. ,VBCOA; Emory Rodgers, Past Pres.,BOCA; and Steve Shapiro, Sec/Treas, BOCA were recognized as honored guest.
VFPA Board members Carl Maurice,Gary Huffman, Howard Summers,John Tunstall, Jeff Flippo,Marlan Morris and Robin Preece, were introduced by President Wills. The President also recognized all Past Presidents of VFPA and all past Board members.
SECRETARY/TREASURERS REPORT
The minutes of the 2000 Annual Meeting were accepted as read.
The treasurer reported that the checking account balance was $ 29,011.41 and that the Associations has 4 certificates of deposit. The report was accepted.
OLD BUSINESS
Fall Conference-Approximately 80 attendees. Gary Huffman and Robin Preece were thanked for a successful seminar.
Regional Training--Seminars were conducted in Bristol and Roanoke. The State Fire Marshals Office, local VFPA members and Carl Maurice were thanked for the success of these meetings. Our goal is to have at least one seminar per Region per year.
Legislative Committee-- Jeff Flippo was commended for his diligence in tracking legislation during the 2001 Session. Fire Services Board Code Development Committee has a number of VFPA members who are very actively following the development of the Fire Prevention Code.
VFPA continued its support of the Central Virginia Burn Camp through a $700 contribution.
Code Training Advisory Committee--Jan Mitchell continues to represent the VFPA on this Committee.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2001-2002
The nominating committee composed of Grover Smiley, Chairman, Dave Diamantes and Robin Preece presented the following recommendations :

2nd Vice President Gary Huffman
Sec./Treas. Howard Summers, Jr.
Delegates-at-Large: John Tunstall and Jeff Flippo
The report of the nominating committee was accepted.
There were no nominations from the floor and the proposed slate was elected.
Steve Shaperio, Sec/Treas of BOCA conducted the Installation of the new officers.
Following the installation ceremonies Steve made the following remarks regarding BOCA and ICC:
The three model code groups continue their activities to consolidate as ICC.
ICC Codes and Standards Committee are open until August 1, 2001
A reminder that Chapter Annual Reports are due on June 1.
BOCA and UBC will meet jointly September 17-20, 2001 in Cincinnati, Ohio
Off site voting be be conducted for the first time. For information call 1.800.214.4321
New Icc codes are expected to be available by the end of the year.
BOCA will hold two seminars in Virginia--Richmond--Norfolk.
NEW BUSINESS
A motion to send a Resolution to the Fire Board and DHCD supporting the ICC Codes passed.
A motion was made to permit the Board to establish a Scholarship Fund. Proposed plan would be to grant a $500 scholarship at the Annual Meeting and Seminar and the Fall Seminar. The motion passed.
Robin Preece presented Life Member Plaques to Woody Brooking, Dave Diamantes and Grover Smiley.
President Wills presented the Presidents Award to Robin Preece.
Members were asked to suggest location for Fall 2001 Seminar
Members voted to have Board select the meeting place for the 2002 Annual Meeting and Seminar.
President Elect Wills thanked the members for their confidence in his ability to serve the Association as President by electing him to a second term. He also urged the members to become more involved in the affairs of the Association., and expressed his hope that his news letters had been of benefit to the members. The President noted that VFPA continues to be actively involved with activities of the Fire Services Board. This is especially true in relation to the development and adoption of the Fire and Building Codes.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 1:20 PM.
