Fire Code and Legislative Considerations for Active Shooter and Hostile Event Planning

Course Description

With the recent increase in school related shootings and different types of violence and hostile events rising, questions about procedures and safety considerations arise and how they affect code enforcement. This program will to provide guidance to those whose responsibilities include the prevention, preparation, and response to all types of emergencies in schools and other high target facilities.  This program will review respective Statewide Fire Prevention Codes, Virginia Administrative Codes and other resources for the fire and code enforcement inspectors to utilize when determining culpability in these situations.

Many localities and elected officials have developed ”knee jerk” reactions as a result of these traumatizing events.  This program will also provide guidance for the code enforcement inspector to work with state and local legislators and school administration to develop solutions that meet the needs of the community, while not disregarding long standing fire safety standards.
